The Sakatti deposit is located 15 kilometres north of Sodankylä. The area is partly within the Viiankiaapa Mire Reserve Area, which is also a Natura 2000 area. The Sakatti deposit has been studied since 2009. Geological knowledge of the deposit is a critical part of the mining project.
The Sakatti copper mining project, owned by Anglo American, is currently in the permitting stage and is set to employ around 350 people. Located in northern Finland, the project will involve underground mining operations supported by a mill and flotation plant. The deposit has an estimated ore grade of 1% and will produce copper concentrate, along with co-products including nickel and platinum group metals (PGMs).
Sakatti is designed as part of Anglo American’s FutureSmart Mining™ initiative, aiming to be a highly automated, low-carbon operation with a minimal surface footprint. From the outset, the project has prioritised the early minimisation of environmental impacts and seeks to deliver a net positive impact (NPI) on biodiversity and local ecosystems. It serves as a blueprint for responsible mining practices. The site falls within the Dfc Köppen-Geiger climate zone, characterised by a subarctic climate.
